The Day My High Speed Blender Arrived
I usually don't get too excited about kitchen appliances, but when our new Vita-Mix blender arrived at the doorstep it felt a bit like Christmas. I had ordered it online just a few days earlier and couldn't wait to try it out.
After a quick rinse out, as per instructions, we piled a bunch of fruit and ice into the beast and gave it a whirl. Yum! Not enough ice though so it was more of a pudding that first time. A very smooth and tasty pudding all the same. You learn very quickly how and when to make the mix more fluid.
In my impatience to try my hand at soup making I ignored all the recipes and just threw in a bunch of assorted fresh vegetables, a touch of salt & pepper, some old beef stock and let it rip.
Unfortunately one of those vegies was a large whole raw onion.
By quickly renaming this dish 'onion soup' and adding some extras like tomato sauce, it wasn't really all that bad. Still made my eyes water though. Note to self: go easy on the onions!
I discovered that following the tried and true recipes is a good idea to get started.
I'm still amazed that just friction from the blade can create piping hot soup in just a few minutes. No heating element required.
My first impression of this machine was how smooth and light the variable switch was - beautiful control. This high speed blender feels strong and confident. I love the ease of cleaning too - it basically cleans itself.
I thought having a timer built in to the machine would be a good idea, but unfortunately there isn't one. I've since found out some of the commercial models do have that feature. For me, I'll just have to keep an eye on the clock.
Overall, this really is an impressive and amazingly versatile machine. It's much more than a blender. Without any added attachments, it can go from making healthy ice cream one minute to making hot soup the next. Then make juice from natural whole foods, grind grain, knead dough, create unbelievably tasty fruit smoothies and green vegetable drinks packed with nutrients. It does dry and wet chopping (no more tears when dicing onions!), makes peanut butter and much much more. The beautifully presented recipe book that came with my model even has recipes for kid's play dough and finger paints.
As you can tell, I'm a convert. I love this way of getting more fruit and vegetables and fiber into my body. I'm eating much less processed and junk food now.
I feel more vibrant, sharp and alert. I'm less hungry and so snack less between meals. I'm also inclined to drink less alcohol in the evenings - which was as added bonus, (although I have heard this machine makes incredible daiquiris and margaritas - so I'll have to watch out for that temptation!)
I have to admit, this Vita-Mix high speed blender isn't cheap - but I'm really glad I made the investment in my family's health.
So that's one New Year's resolution out of the way. Now to start jogging!
